The port town grew up around the port of La Pointe des Galets. The site immediately next to the port was laid out on a grid plan; this is where the passenger and goods stations, warehouses, workshops and accommodation for engineers, service managers and workers were built. The rest of the "urban fabric" was composed mainly of straw huts constructed in more haphazard fashion.
