Print by F. Fauchery, 1844
A series of pictures illustrating the various stages of marronnage were published in 1844 in Les Marrons, a novel written by Louis Timagène Houat. The author was the son of a freed slave. He was arrested in 1835 for incitement to revolt and exiled to Paris. A scathing critique of the slave system, his novel was rejected by Bourbon society and was only recently rediscovered by the historian Raoul Lucas.
