Archive documents suggest the cave, which is located at an altitude of more than 2,200 metres, was one of several marron refuges. Archaeologists rediscovered the site during surveys, and test excavations were carried out in 2017 to record the various occupation levels and associated finds. Although excavations show that humans certainly settled the site, it is difficult to confirm the identity of its occupants. Were they hunters or marrons? Or both, one after the other?
