The Caverne des Lataniers was a cave used by explorers of the Fournaise volcano in the 19th century; but the isolated location of this natural shelter with panoramic views suggest it may have been used as a refuge by marrons in the 17th and 18th centuries. Research-oriented excavations were carried out here in 2017 and 2019.
