In 1835, 167 people from 31 families were recorded as living in the cirque. At this point in time, the only official concession was the Îlet à Cordes, awarded to the freed slave Figaro in 1826 in recognition of his cooperation during a marron hunt. In 1848, 70 were living in Cilaos, officially settled in 1840.
