The Bas region of the island was considered by the first settlers to be "good country", and "beautiful fertile country"; while Les Hauts were described in less flattering terms as the "country consumed by subterranean fires" or "the fiery mountain". Les Hauts were gradually explored and recognised for their true worth from the 18th century onwards.
