Naturalist expeditions in the 1990s led to the discovery of the "Vallée perdue" or "lost valley" site (subsequently renamed the "Vallée Secrète" or "secret valley") in Cilaos. The extraordinary and unusual discovery of this undisturbed habitat probably used by marrons provided the starting point for a major area of archaeological research on Réunion.
