Caverne des Lataniers (Saint-Joseph / Le Tampon)

Expeditions around the Fournaise volcano became increasingly popular in the 19th century. The Caverne des Lataniers, where several excavations were carried out from 2017 to 2019, was a well-used rest shelter where explorers have left behind evidence of their stay. This is a stone engraved by explorer and writer Louis Héry, who stayed here with his companions on Monday 29 August 1853.
