An aerial survey carried out in 2013 above the Maïdo and the Mafate cirque from a helicopter with an onboard LiDAR system produced a precise topography of both sectors. Multiple field walking surveys since then have identified anomalies in the field; this led to the rediscovery of the Mafate-les-eaux spa village.
