The terrain and the nature of the remains archaeologists expected to find on the site made it impossible to dig mechanical test pits on the Ravine du Trou site in Saint-Leu, where visible surface features had been identified. Archaeologists therefore started with an airborne LiDAR survey to give an overview of the site. Field walking surveys were then carried out in 2019 based on the data acquired, and after minimal plant clearance, it was possible to make photographic and topographic records of the remains.
