A rescue operation was carried out in 2013 on the bed of the Rivière des Galets to take samples from a group of dead trees, the remains of theLes Bas primary forest which existed before the island was settled by humans. This tree, revealed in a cross section of mud slide covering the palaeoforest, was used to date the excavated trunks.
