Changes to the environment of archaeological remains and their exposure to oxygen and humidity cause them to deteriorate. Archaeologists arrest corrosion, mould and other chemical alterations by placing objects in an environment lacking air (anoxic) to prevent the survival of micro-organisms and corrosion reactions.
