A closer look at the natural harbour shows a large number of landing stages with warehouses and the Barachois basin. Planned as early as 1820, excavation work on the basin was suspended in 1824 after the island was hit by a cyclone; only the "Milius pier" was completed before itself being destroyed by a cyclone in 1829. The project was abandoned.
