Saint-Denis lodge, 1739

1015

Guyomar map

A large lodge was built in 1739 on the seafront at Saint-Denis, within the immediate vicinity of the marines. It contained stores, the offices of the Compagnie des Indes and the governor’s living quarters. The island’s first public building coincided with the start of plantation society – coffee and then sugarcane production in the 19th century – and now houses the Réunion préfecture.
