The Umayyad Mosque in The Book of Felicity by Abd al-Hasan Al-Isfahani

The Great Umayyad Mosque in Damascus
9076

This composite treatise, painted in Iraq at the turn of the 15th century, borrows some of the iconography of the Wonders of Creation by Al-Qazwini. Among its real and mythical wonders is the Umayyad mosque.

Seen from the courtyard facade, in this accurate representation the mosque is topped by a bulbous dome, and its prayer hall is flanked by two minarets. The reliquary of St John the Baptist appears in the centre of the arcades resting on columns with capitals. The oratory is lit by a myriad of hanging lamps.
