Southern view of the interior courtyard of the Umayyad Mosque, Damascus, Syria, 12 October 1921, (Autochrome, 9 x 12 cm), Frédéric Gadmer, Département des Hauts-de-Seine, musée Albert-Kahn, Archives de la Planète, A 29 503
This autochrome, taken before the courtyard mosaics were extensively restored, shows the facade of the prayer hall, as well as the dome of the clock, one of the courtyard pavilions then surrounded by an enclosure wall. This facade reveals details of the interior elevation of the prayer hall, with the aisles parallel to the qiblah wall interrupted by a transept aisle leading to the mihrab, and a cupola at their crossing point.
