Minaret of the Bride

Damascus, Great Umayyad Mosque
9046

This minaret, the only one dating from the mosque built by al-Walid I, retains much of its original elevation. Only its lantern seems to have been modified several times. It collapsed for the first time in 1174 and was subsequently restored. However, its square plan, topped by a hemispherical dome, as seen on the Venetian painting of 1511, suggests the restored minaret retained its Umayyad features. It was extensively modified in 1759 and then again in the early 20th century, as the photograph shows.
