Qusayr ‘Amra baths (Jordan). Fresco from the first half of the 8th century.
Painted on the back wall of the audience hall of the Qusayr ‘Amra baths, the fresco depicts six sovereigns in two rows, each identified by an inscription. It attests to the scale and breadth of the Umayyad Empire, since the kings shown governed the territories conquered by the Arab armies: the Byzantine, Sassanid, and Chinese emperors, the Negus of Abyssinia, the Visigoth king of Spain, and the Khaqan of the Turks.
