Since the 1st century, a temple dedicated to Jupiter had stood within a double enclosure on the site later occupied by the mosque. When al-Walid I ordered the construction of the Great Mosque in 705, the temple enclosure was reused, along with various building materials found on the site, such as this carved pediment with entablature.
