The south wall of the mosque, into which three mihrab niches have since been set, is the former wall of the temenos of the temple dedicated to Jupiter, erected in the 1st century. This wall was also used in the 4th century when the site was Christianized following the construction of a basilica. Like the later mosque, the basilica backed directly onto the wall.
