Eustache de Lorey was director of the French Institute of Muslim Archaeology and Art in Damascus from 1922 to 1930. In 1928, he was the first to rediscover the mosaics of the Great Umayyad Mosque. As such, he is sometimes considered to have been the first to have conceived of their existence.
