The entire Dome of the Rock is structured around the rocky outcrop from which it gets its name. Its location, its double ambulatory plan centred around a high central cupola, and the presence in the centre of a rock-relic, reflect the intention of its founder to make it a commemorative site and a major place of pilgrimage. This edifice, unprecedented in the Islamic world, is inspired by the architecture of the Christian martyria of the region.
