The Umayyad decorative scheme on the outside of the Dome of the Rock has disappeared completely. The interior has been restored several times, making it sometimes difficult to date. The double ambulatory retains wide sections of Umayyad decoration, however, which borrows from the Byzantine decorative traditions of the Levantine region.
The veined marble facing on the lower part forms geometric patterns echoed by the heavy polychrome and golden mosaic scrolls of the upper sections. The architraves between the arches of the octagonal ambulatory are adorned with copper plaques decorated with vinescrolls.
