The Black Stag

8157

As an introduction to the very long graphic sequence that unfolds on either side of the gallery, this stag is the only representation of its species in this part of the cave. It is painted in the inner curve of the ceiling. Several signs lie beneath the figure, including a line of eleven black dots and a remarkably regular square. Only the upper part of the animal has been depicted, but the figured elements display a high degree of finishing, especially the head. The open mouth is enveloped in a cloud of red pigment, which could indicate the breath. The antlers, which are pushed back, appear to indicate that the animal is troating. The spray technique was used to indicate the body and head, with a stencil to contain the external edges of the impacts. The tips of the horns and the hindquarters were painted with a brush.
