This photograph shows the organisation of the archaeological work carried out by Jacques de Morgan at Khargosh Tappe, Iran. Morgan describes his working method: “I began excavating the great tell by cutting a trench from the east to the centre of the small hill. [...] We opened the trench on 26 January 1890 and completed the works by 9 February. Within days, at a depth of 2.5 metres, I came across a large number of skeletons which I attributed to the Turkmen. Each of them was surrounded by complete or fragmentary vases. The fine earth of the tell was filled with large and small pebbles."
