Horse in mammoth ivory from Espélugues cave, Lourdes (Hautes-Pyrénées)

This statuette, approximately 7 cm long, was sculpted in three dimensions from a piece of mammoth tusk that was probably already fossilised at the time, as was the case for remains of bones and teeth found at Étiolles. This horse, discovered in 1886, demonstrates the attention the Magdalenians gave to anatomical details, even if the mane is somewhat simplified.
