In other parts of the world at the same time, hunter-gatherers were settling, in particular in the Near East, where there was year-long access to abundant resources. They built villages with permanent houses and stone foundations. Here, in shelter 26 from the Early Natufian at Mallaha (Israel), we can see circular walls as well as a large permanent limestone mortar for grinding plants, and perhaps wild cereals. Towards the end of the Natufian, from 10,000 BCE onwards, several cereals, including wheat, were domesticated in the Near East.
