By studying knapped blades using refits, we have been able to discern different levels of skill, from clumsy, heavy-handed attempts, to work by highly skilled master knappers. These refits also tell us that these master knappers worked the best flint, around the central hearth. Apprentices practised further away on second-rate blocks. This gives us a glimpse of Magdalenian sociology.
