Palaeobotanical studies, in particular those carried out on a sedimentary sequence brought to light in 1962 on the edge of Lake Geneva (Lausanne-Vidy), in which many layers were preserved, show that at least five species of willow were present in the Magdalenian: the dull-leaved Salix retusa; the dwarf willow, or Salix herbacea; the large-leaved Salix grandifolia; the Salix breviserrata with its serrated edges; and the mountain willow, or Salix arbuscula.
