Reindeer engraved on a perforated baton (Kesslerloch)

Renne gravé sur un bâton percé (Kesslerloch)
5517

The lifted tail, drawn-in stomach, wide-open nostrils, swollen dewlap and fully-grown antlers tell us that the reindeer engraved on this baton is a male during the rut, and not an animal butting something, which a superficial reading might suggest. Length of the engraving at its longest point: 8.5 cm. Perforated batons were probably used to straighten the natural curve of the sticks, made from reindeer antler, that were inserted in the perforation.
