The engraved pebble from Étiolles (3D)

3574

Approximately 30 cm long and weighing 3 kg, this block of hard limestone has rounded edges and two very smooth faces. It can therefore be considered a pebble, even if in everyday language we would consider a pebble to be a smaller and lighter stone. Front: a horse is followed by an imaginary being with both human and animal attributes. The reddened area near the left side has been exposed to heat from the hearth. Back: on this side, covered with minute concretions, the engravings are finer and denser. We can make out the more simplified forms of a horse and two reindeer, positioned the opposite way round.

Object conserved and displayed at the musée départemental de Préhistoire d’Île-de-France, in Nemours.
