The Magdalenians settled three times in the same natural depression and organised their activities around the same hearth, D71. The positions of remains indicate both similarities and differences in the organisation of the space during different stays.

The engraved pebble

The engraved pebble from Étiolles was found in the stones surrounding the hearth at level D71-1, underneath the first circle of large stone slabs.

Neck of a horse

After D71-1 had been abandoned, a horse’s neck was left inside the circle of stones surrounding the hearth. This mysterious gesture, episode “D71-0”, may have had either symbolic or ritualistic significance.
